Painting a Make

For the second Make Cycle I realized I had to think a little more creatively about what to do that would exhibit science and truth. For my Make I made a painting, but the process by which I made the painting was what I tied to science and truth. I decided to paint a non-representational painting. When doing so I decided I would listen to a certain type of music and let it influence my painting. Music is known to be very influential to our mind. Our moods, feelings, movements and thoughts can all be influenced by music. Everyone has a different neural chemistry and there for music effects us all differently. If you were to give a group of people the same song, paint, canvas and setting but all separated from one another you would end up with completely different paintings. I notice when I paint to certain songs my hand gestures change and the amount of color mixing varies.

I also wanted to bring up the issue of truth. What is truth when it comes to the perception of a piece of art work. Just like music, art on its own causes different chemical responses in the brain, causing different reactions to different pieces. One person could look at a piece and think it is beautiful and another person could think it hideous. This can cause the issue of what is art and what is not. Art can be very subjective and at times almost impossible to judge.

I've had a few reactions to my peers about my idea for this make. One of which that stood out to me is that some one had the idea of a person reading something and when it is done they continue to improve while another person is listening paints to the words that are being spoken. I thought this was a very innovative idea that could be artistic in just the process.

Reflection

So this week we've been talking more about how science and writing can be related. We have been assigned our make cycle #1 this week. In this we had to go to a place that incorporated science and art. With this we have to write a one page paper on various questions such as who is gets that science here, who gets to name this science, and what does this represent and what is to be the truth here?
I decided to go to the McMillan Greenhouse here on campus. It had a lot of artful beauty and science incorporated.

Creativity

Last class we were given the option to partake in three different activities, decorating your daybook, make a scribbling machine or scribble with light. All of which I wanted to do but I went with decorating my daybook. I didn't exactly have a plan in mind, I just collected things that looked interesting to me and put them all together. I didn't want to put too much on because I already liked the pattern my daybook had but I wanted to put on just enough to emphasize it. At first I didn't know how the project related to an English class but I soon realized that I was using my creativity to create something, and that you use that same creativity when writing. In all, the class has been real fun and I'm excited for what's in store for the rest of the semester.
